Ive admired Char Ketton’s work for a long time. We found each other through Instagram, even though we don't know each other in any real sense, there has always seemed to be something familiar in our work, a shared interest in line and texture, in light and shadow, sand, beaches, in the body and the feminine, in things that feel both delicate and substantial. To me that feels like knowing someone. Recently I asked Char if she would like to begin a kind of pen pal collaboration. Not quite a collaboration in the usual sense. We didnt make a brief, no agreed outcome, and nothing to make together at this stage. Instead, we’re sending ideas, images and works back and forth and seeing what happens.

She sent me some of her sketches, paintings and works in progress. Opening and looking through an artist's sketchbooks felt like a really special moment. A kind of behind the scenes glimpse into a body of work that you rarely get to experience, especially in your own home, on a misty afternoon. These photographs are the first evidence of the exchange, my Et Al chain laid across one of her canvases. I liked the similarity between Chars lines and the chain, almost asif she was painting that piece already. There was something about seeing them together that made the connection between our work feel tangible, l really like the fact that neither of us knows exactly what this is yet. Perhaps it will become something. Perhaps it will remain a correspondence between two practices that happen to meet for a while.
